Abstract

This project will address the problem of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV), and AIDS among South African refugees. The collaborating institutions are the Regional Office of the Health and Refugee Trust (HEART) and the Health Department of the African National Congress. The project will develop a health education campaign to prevent the transmission of these diseases amongst South African refugees in Zambia, Tanzania, Angola, and Uganda. The project will collect refugee information about, and attitudes towards STD's, HIV and AIDS, by using a combination of self-completed questionnaire; focused group discussions; and workshops. This information will provide a base on which to test existing educational materials about the disease, and to develop new educational processes and materials, which may include workshops, pamphlets, posters, role plays, community theatre, etc.
