Abstract

This grant will allow Development Workshop (DW) to document the environmental burden in urban areas of Angola, and analyse the differences in poverty and vulnerability between the capital (Luanda) and selected second- and third-tier cities. Using an action-research approach, researchers will provide baseline data in the following areas: land tenure and land markets; the urban environmental burden; access to water and basic services; habitat and housing quality; and settlement density and overcrowding. Using a comparative analytical framework, they will identify how interactions between the five factors produce vulnerability profiles specific to each city, and how vulnerability profiles differ from one city to another. The research is part of an agenda aimed at promoting pro-poor planning and building the capacity of urban planners and administrators in participatory methodologies. The findings will be made accessible to the public, in general, and urban managers and technicians, in particular, in the form of such products as a website and a training module.
