The relationship between the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and gender remains largely unexplored, both in Africa and elsewhere. Much of the original conceptualization that provided terms of reference for most of the chapters of this volume came from the Gender Working Group that met in Nairobi in November 1997. Members of the group included Nidhi Tandon of Abantu for Development; Gillian Marcelle, then of the United Nations University Institute for New Technologies; Nancy Hafkin of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA); Liz Levey of the Ford Foundation; Hilda Tadria of ECA; Anriette Esterhuyzen of SANGONeT; Ruth Ochieng of ISIS–Women’s International Cross Cultural Exchange; Suzanne Drouilh of Nairobi; Fatoumata Sow of Dakar; Tina James of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Johannesburg; and John Baraza, Edith Ofwona Adera, and Eva Rathgeber of IDRC, Nairobi. During 2 days of animated discussion, this group identified a number of key research issues related to ICTs and gender.
