| PAN - GIS Infrastructure for Digital Data Exchange |
Geographic information systems (GIS) is a technology used to add the necessary geographic dimension to development plans, programs and projects. It provides the necessary tools to integrate spatial data; carry out spatial analysis; and display results in ways easy to comprehend and use by professionals and the public. Electronic communication technology, especially computer based services and networks, are developing very rapidly, allowing instantaneous delivery of various types of information over large distances and political boundaries. The PAN Networking (PAN), a program of IDRC, is in the process of establishing an infrastructure to provide advanced, integrated GIS services in the Asia Pacific region to advance the cause of sustainable and equitable developments. This project will carry out a feasibility study involving four countries in the region. The study will assess the current status in the selected countries with regard to spatial data exchange; existing facilities for distributed data access; user needs and mode of data usage; existing regulations for data access; factors that may impact the use of identified software tools; extent of the use of electronic networks in day-to-day computing and GIS applications; etc. Following the completion of the feasibility study, project participants will implement a pilot digital data exchange system in a selected country and demonstrate its performance to convince countries in the region that such a system can facilitate the exchange of digital geographic data between agencies within the country and between countries as well.
