IDRC: Yves Beaulieu

Over the past several years, IDRC has been supporting research on competition, what it is, how to encourage it in developing economies, and overall, how to keep markets competitive.

Unlike water and sanitation, competition isn’t generally thought of as an important development issue. But competition keeps markets honest, ensuring that people pay fair prices for the goods and services they consume.

Fair and honest markets are especially critical to the poor who pay disproportionately more for basics, such as food and water. Competition then can extend the benefits of well functioning markets more broadly across a society.
