Two IDRC research partners have been named 2009 Malaria Champions of the Americas by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Mario H. Rodriguez López of Mexico's National Public Health Institute (INSP) was recognized for his efforts to eradicate malaria from Mexico and Central America using alternatives to pesticides, and building a health information system in the region. A leading authority on malaria, Rodriguez López has overseen a number of projects funded by IDRC through its Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health program. The Health Division of the Foundation for Education and Social Development (Fundación FES Social) in Colombia was also recognized for more than 18 years of research, technical assistance, monitoring, and developing public health interventions to fight malaria. In the 1990s, IDRC funded Fundación FES Social’s efforts to improve public health through better coordination between the universities and research institutions, and other organizations.
