Prev News 41 of 87 Next

Ottawa, Canada, August 31, 2009 – Barbara Ibrahim, a renowned expert on the Arab World’s philanthropic sector, will be in Ottawa on September 3 to deliver a lecture at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). In her presentation “Arab Philanthropy and Social Investing in a Global Context,” Dr. Ibrahim will reflect on the Arab world’s rich tradition of philanthropy, and how it has changed over the past decade with the rise in oil revenues and a reduction in state social spending.

Date: Thursday, September 3, 2009
Time: 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Where: 150 Kent (corner of Albert), 8th Floor

As founding director of the John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement, Dr. Ibrahim helps to guide the Arab philanthropic sector’s transformation. She served for 14 years as regional director for West Asia and North Africa at the Population Council, an international non-governmental organization. She has published widely in the fields of gender and health, youth studies, and women’s employment, as well as directing programs in urban poverty and gender relations through the Cairo office of the Ford Foundation.

The event is open to the media. French and English simultaneous interpretation is available. Spaces are limited and journalists are encouraged to register by calling Isabelle Bourgeault-Tassé at 613-696-2343.
