Partnering Examples

In collaboration with funding partners, IDRC supports research on diverse development issues, including:

Tackling Global Health Challenges:

The Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI) is a partnership of five Canadian federal agencies (IDRC, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Health Canada, CIDA, and the Public Health Agency of Canada). GHRI fosters international research to address global health challenges. Its flagship initiative, the Teasdale-Corti Health Research Partnership Program, supports research teams working in some 40 countries on a wide range of themes, from broad questions of policy to HIV/AIDS prevention, to childhood obesity. Through the new Global Health Leadership Awards, it supports the career development of emerging health research and policy leaders in developing countries. www.ghri.ca

Mobilizing the Global Telecentre Movement:

Telecentre.org’s social investments and services are bringing the benefits of modern technology to communities across the developing regions. Funded by Microsoft, the Swiss Development Corporation and IDRC, this global partnership supports the largest and most comprehensive research project ever conducted on public access to information and communication technologies. Telecentre.org was IDRC’s first major public-private partnership; its success has led to the creation of six telecentre academies and one global academy, support to 42 telecentre networks, and more than 50 workshops.  www.telecentre.org

Responding to Climate Change:

The Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) research and capacity development program was launched by IDRC and the UK’s Department for International Development in 2006. It aims to improve the capacity of African countries to adapt to climate change in ways that benefit the most vulnerable. CCAA supports participatory action research, education and training, and communications and networking on adaptation. It provides funding support to over 30 action research projects, as well as the African Climate Change Fellowship Program and the Africa Adapt network for knowledge exchange on adaptation. web.idrc.ca/ccaa

Toward Stronger Independent Policy Institutes:

The Think Thank Initiative is dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions – “think tanks” – in developing countries. Investing in the long-term health of these organizations will allow them to build local capacity for applied social and economic research and to better provide objective, high-quality research for practical use by policymakers. Funding for the Think Tank Initiative has been provided by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and IDRC.  First launched in Africa, the initiative is set to roll out in South Asia and Latin America. web.idrc.ca/thinktank
