Lael Bethlehem Lael Bethlehem is the coordinator of research and policy development at the National Economic Development and Labour Council. She has an MA in Industrial Sociology from the University of the Witwatersrand. Lael has worked in labour and economic policy research work as a researcher for the Industrial Strategy Project and the National Labour and Economic Development Institute. She is currently the chairperson of the National Forestry Advisory Council. Mark Butler Mark Butler is a senior researcher at the Community Agency for Social Inquiry. He has worked in a wide range of research fields, including political violence, out-of-school youth, adult basic education, development and environment. Most recently, Mark represented the non-governmental sector on the drafting team of the Environment GreenPaper. Mark is active in the Environmental Justice Networking Forum. Ann Coleman Ann Coleman graduated in 1985 with a BSc in Chemical Engineering and in 1994 with an MSc, both from the University of Cape Town. She is currently engaged in environmental consultancy work, which includes projects on waste management, with an emphasis on waste minimisation and cleaner production strategies. Iain Currie Iain Currie BA Hons (Witwatersrand) MA LLB (Cape Town), Advocate of the Supreme Court of South Africa, is a lecturer at the Witwatersrand Law School. He acts as a part-time consultant to government departments, non-governmental organisations and the private sector on constitutional law, property and environmental law. Bill Gibson Bill Gibson is a professor of economics at the University of Vermont, USA. He was awarded a doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley, and he has specialised in macro-models for developing countries. Bill has published numerous academic articles, including macro-models for South Africa, Nicaragua, Mexico and Bolivia. He has been a visiting professor at Berkeley and Notre Dame, and visiting researcher at the University of Dur-ban-Westville and the Development Bank of Southern Africa. Michael Goldblatt Michael Goldblatt is Programme Manager of the Environment and Development Programme at the Graduate School of Public and Development Management at the University of the Witwatersrand. He is currently completing a Masters degree in Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Witwaterstand, and is involved in a number of environmental research projects in the fields of environmental economics and water resource management. He is a member of the drafting committee of the Integrated Pollution Control Policy. Peter Lazarus Peter Lazarus BA LLB (Witwatersrand) is an advocate of the Supreme Court of South Africa, and specialises in environmental and water law. He is also a part-time lecturer in environmental law at the Wits Law School. During 1995 and 1996 he was a member of the Water Law Reform Monitoring Panel appointed by the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry to oversee the water law reform process. Pelelo Magane Pelelo Magane is an organiser for the Chemical Workers’ Industrial Union, where he has worked since 1986. He is currently a branch health, safety and environment coordinator. Pelelo serves on the board of the Group for Environmental Monitoring, and takes a keen interest in community environmental issues. Shirley Miller Shirley Miller is the health, safety and environment coordinator of the Chemical Workers’ Industrial Union, where she has worked since 1985. She recently represented labour on the drafting committee of the Environment Green Paper. Shirley has a diploma in Occupational Health from the University of Cape Town where she is also completing a Masters degree. Rob Short Rob Short has undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in biology and environmental science. Rob was part of the team that drafted the background discussion document for Consultative National Environmental Policy Process and has been involved in several policy initiatives. He currently works for the consultance Environmental Risk Services, specialising in industrial environmental management. Clive van Horen Clive van Horen is an economist based at the Energy and Development Research Centre, University of Cape Town, where he is Deputy Director. He has worked on numerous projects related to energy policy in Southern Africa, focusing on economic aspects of energy and environmental policy issues. His formal training includes a Chartered Accountant (SA) qualification and a PhD in Economics. His publications include two books: Poverty and Power: energy and the South African state (with Anton Eberhard) published by Pluto Press and University of Cape Town Press in 1995, and Counting the social costs: electricity and externalities in South Africa published by Elan Press and University of Cape Town Press in 1996. Dirk Ernst van Seventer Dirk Ernst van Seventer works at the Development Bank of Southern Africa as a policy analyst. His work focuses on medium term macroeconomic and development issues using quantitative tools and techniques. He has an M. Econ from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. |
