IDRC has re-created a program of support for developing-country graduate students. Since 2006/2007, investments have been made to support the research training of Southern Junior Researchers working or studying in developing countries. The Southern Junior Researchers Awards program covers doctoral field research costs in the region for individuals already studying for a research degree, full study costs (mostly PhD), or in a small number of cases if the program is not available in the region, PhD costs in Canada. Students participate in training workshops to enhance their research, writing, and communication skills. They are also encouraged to publish in peer-reviewed journals. In partnership with IDRC Program Initiatives and regional offices, a number of institutions have been identified in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) to manage and administer competitive awards in disciplines where there is a need for research capacity development. Discussions are ongoing to develop capacity in a number of other areas in SSA, Latin America and the Caribbean, and possibly later in Asia. University for Peace (UPEACE) Africa Programme 2009-08-04 Support is for 22 doctoral research awards and four (4) full-study PhDs in peace and security research.
