When (begins) : 2008-10-30 13:30 (Ottawa) 2008-10-30 15:00 (Ottawa) - Where : IDRC, 150 Kent Street, 8th floor, Hopper Room, Ottawa, ON Dr. Alka Acharya is a leading Indian sinologist who specializes in the relationship between India and China. She is associate professor of Chinese studies in the Centre for East Asian Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Dr. Acharya earned her PhD at Jawaharlal Nehru University, and since 1993 she has been teaching Chinese foreign policy and political economy there. From 2006 until early 2008 she was chairperson of the East Asian Studies program. She is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Chinese Studies (New Delhi), she has been nominated by the Prime Minister to the India-China Eminent Persons Group, and she is a member of the Indian government’s National Security Advisory Board. Dr. Acharya has researched and written widely on India-China relations and other aspects of Chinese foreign policy. She is joint editor of the 2002 essay collection Crossing a Bridge of Dreams: 50 years of India China, and has herself contributed chapters to many other books. She is chief editor of China Report: a Journal of East Asian Affairs, and contributes regularly to the Economic and Political Weekly. Her most recent book is titled China & India: Politics of Incremental Engagement. The theme of her presentation at IDRC will be: "China and India: Perils, Promises and Prospects."
