The IDRC Research Internship Award provides exposure to research for international development through a program of training in research management and grant administration under the guidance of IDRC program staff. The internship is designed to provide hands-on learning experiences in research program management - in the creation, dissemination and utilization of knowledge from an international perspective. The intern will undertake a program of research on the topic submitted when competing for the internship award and on Indian foreign policy. The candidate will be trained in the techniques of research management through hands-on experience with the Centre's policies and practices for grant administration under the mentorship of the Director of the Policy and Planning Group, President’s Office. Duration Internships are tenable for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months at IDRC headquarters in Ottawa. Program The intern will undertake a program of research on the topic submitted when competing for the Internship during a part of his/her time, will provide research assistance on issues dealing with Indian foreign policy, and will be trained in the techniques of research management through hands-on work experience with IDRC’s programming planning and practices. Interns’ Employment Status at IDRC Interns doing their internship in Canada will receive a salary in a range from CA$36 754 to CA$42 548 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. They will be considered as full-time term employees of the Centre. Benefits include contributions to Employment Insurance, Employer Health Tax and the Canada Pension Plan and 4% in lieu of vacation leave. Some travel and research expenses will also be supported, up to a maximum of CA$10 000. Eligibility The IDRC Internship program is aimed at candidates who, through demonstrated achievements in academic studies, work or research, have shown interest in the creation and utilization of knowledge from an international perspective. Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and citizens of developing countries may submit an application. They must be either currently registered in a Master's Program or have completed a Master's Degree in a recognized university. Their research must focus on a developing country. Candidates need not be affiliated with an institution. They may participate in internships as part of an academic requirement. Relocation of the Intern IDRC will cover the travel costs for a developing country Intern from his/her country to Ottawa to take up the internship (and return at the end of the internship). The costs of this travel will be in addition to the CA$10 000 allowance for travel related to his/her work program and research. Deadline Deadline for receipt of applications: October 17, 2008. The award will be announced in November or December 2008. Selection IDRC staff will review the applications and select one candidate. Commencement of the award: January 5, 2009. President’s Office Priorities for the 2009 Internship The successful applicant will have a strong interest in development in India and South Asia. His/her past study and proposed research will reflect this. Within IDRC, the candidate will be expected to provide research assistance in areas including the study of the foreign policy and external relations of India, as well as providing support to IDRC’s programming and practices. Please note: The selected candidate cannot receive any other government scholarship, award, subsidy, bursary, honorarium or hold any federal government contract in support of a research/work project for the duration of the award. A non-Canadian residing or studying in Canada who is recommended for an award will be required to obtain a valid work permit before the commencement of the Internship. The Centre reserves the right to change priorities and structure and this may determine the final choice and allocation of Centre Internships. Applications will be evaluated according to criteria, such as relevance to sustainable and equitable development and to IDRC priorities, quality of the proposal and suitability of the candidate. If there are ethical questions connected with the proposal, the applicant may, at IDRC’s discretion, be required to submit the appropriate approval for the Ethic’s Committee of the University.
