Job Overview
As part of the Research for International Tobacco Control (RITC) program, the program officer will support and advance policy-relevant tobacco control research in low and middle income countries. RITC’s thematic focus emphasizes tobacco as a development issue. The program is uniquely situated within the international arena to fill a vacuum for multidisciplinary research that addresses the negative impacts of both tobacco consumption and production, which together encompass health, social, economic, agricultural and environmental issues. The Program Officer will under the guidance of senior team members, manage project grants and monitor their implementation. She/he will directly interact with and support the international team by identifying needs, providing technical advice and coordinating and implementing project activities.
Candidate Profile
Education
Masters or equivalent experience and some record of research and publication in tobacco control in developing regions
Experience
Seven years relevant experience which includes: conducting and managing research; managing a competitive grants process; gender analysis as it relates to Tobacco Control; managing networks; and building and maintaining partner relationships.
Language
Bilingual (English and French) position at an intermediate level
Knowledge
Knowledge of Tobacco Control and the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Knowledge of key players in the field of Tobacco Control Knowledge of bilateral granting agencies and their reporting requirements
Competencies
Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skill Good analytical and problem-solving skills Capacity for increased initiative, independent action and program level responsibility Awareness and sensitivity towards individual, gender and cultural differences
Additional Information
This position requires a willingness to travel internationally an average of 50 days per year
