Job Overview

The Urban Poverty & Environment Program (UPE) funds research and activities in developing countries that apply research to reducing environmental burdens on the urban poor and enhancing the use of natural resources for food, water and income security.

Based at the IDRC head office in Ottawa, Canada, reporting to the Director of Environment and Natural Research Management (ENRM), the Program Leader will oversee the planning and implementation of UPE’s initiatives by providing the intellectual leadership and managing a multidisciplinary team of professionals based in Canada, as well as in IDRC’s regional offices. S/he will represent the program and will develop partnerships with other actors in Canada and internationally, and will to promote UPE’s continued leadership on issues of urban development and poverty research and policy.



Candidate Profile

Education

  • PhD and a record of research and publication in a discipline relevant to urban development in developing regions (ex. Environmental Planning, Architectural engineering …)


  • Experience

  • Ten years relevant experience in research/project management
  • Experience leading and managing a multidisciplinary team including diverse cultures, expertise and experience
  • Experience in urban environment and development research
  • Experience working in developing regions


  • Language

  • Bilingual (English and French) position at an intermediate level

  • Proficiency in Spanish is an asset


  • Knowledge

  • Understanding of global, national and regional policy landscapes in relation to urban development and research
  • Knowledge of links between water management, waste management and urban vulnerability (including urban planning and urban agriculture) in developing regions
  • Knowledge and understanding of ENRM in relation to development and poverty reduction in urban contexts


  • Competencies

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills
  • Strong planning, organization, coordination and negotiation skills under pressure
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of concurrent field studies, consultations, and meetings in an international setting over a tight timeline
  • Ability to lead and manage a diverse, multidisciplinary, international team
  • Ability to think and act in a strategic, innovative and creative manner
  • Ability to represent the Program’s and IDRC’s interests and activities effectively and persuasively at senior organizational and international levels
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to individual, gender and cultural differences


  • Additional Information

    This position requires a willingness to travel internationally 60 to 90 days per year.
