IDRC has supported research in Rwanda since 1976. Because the country’s economy has always relied heavily on agriculture, IDRC’s early focus was on improving the output of traditional crops. In the 1970s and 1980s, IDRC grantees found ways to boost the yields of important food crops such as sorghum, oilseeds, cassava, sweet potatoes, and bananas.

Recent research has concentrated on innovative composting techniques to enhance soil productivity, and the application of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in healthcare delivery and in higher education.
