Born in 1929 in Oak Lake, Manitoba, Maurice Strong is recognized as a leading international environmentalist and one of Canada’s most successful businessmen. Throughout his career, he has straddled the private and public sectors. From 1948 to 1966, he served in investment and senior management positions with corporations in the energy and financial sectors. In 1966 he resigned as president of Power Corporation of Canada to head Canada’s External Aid Office, later reorganized as the Canadian International Development Agency. Among his career highlights, Strong served as Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (1992), and was Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General (1997-2005). In business, Strong served as chairman and CEO of Petro-Canada (1976-78), chairman of the International Energy Development Corporation (1980-83), and chairman of the Canada Development Investment Corporation (1982-84). Over the years, Strong has shared his expertise with various organizations dealing with development, environmental and humanitarian issues. A Companion of the Order of Canada, Strong has been a member of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada since 1992.
