Born in Montreal in 1908, Louis Rasminsky later studied economics at the University of Toronto and the London School of Economics. After graduating, he joined the League of Nations in Geneva as a specialist in monetary and banking matters. On his return to Canada in 1940, he joined the Bank of Canada, and later acted as Alternate Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Canada’s Foreign Exchange Control Board. Rasminsky played an important role as a member of the Canadian delegation to the Bretton Woods conference, which led to a new international financial system following the Second World War. He was actively involved with the International Monetary Fund from its inception until his appointment as Governor of the Bank of Canada in 1961. In 1973 Rasminsky resigned from the Bank of Canada and was appointed Chairman of IDRC’s Board of Governors. He was awarded many honours, including the distinguished Public Service Award of Canada, the Vanier Medal, and the Order of Canada. Louis Rasminsky passed away on 15 September 1998 at his home in Ottawa.
