The Style Guide for Editors and Proofreaders of IDRC Books is the house style manual for the publishing program of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Over the years, the editors at IDRC Books have made choices where there is more than one "proper" way of answering an editorial question. To make life easier for the editor or proofreader working on IDRC books outside of IDRC, and as a resource tool for the publishing industry at large, these choices have been collected into this style guide. Its prime purpose is to ensure that material published by IDRC Books is presented in a coherent and consistent manner, upholding the high standards of IDRC, the world of international scholarly publishing, and the English language. It is also recommended as a reference tool for other scholarly publishers and editing professionals around the world. We believe that this guide is an excellent example of a "house style manual," and we hope that you will use it well and provide us with your thoughts and suggestions on its content and presentation. The IDRC style guide has been many years in the making, having undergone countless modifications in format, content. and medium of publication. This version now encapsulates many years of hard work and experience on the part of the staff of IDRC Books, particularly its editing staff past and present including the late Amy Chouinard, Bill Carman, Bob Stanley, Cathy Egan, Gil Croome, Kathy Kealey, Marilyn Campbell, Michael Graham, Reg MacIntyre, Rob Drysdale, Sandra Garland, and Susan Stockwell. Our thanks to all of them. IDRC Books, January 1996
