"Discrimination against South Asian women begins at, or even before, birth."

"The overall picture is one of overlapping and complementary forms of exclusion."

"To implement the agenda for women's equality, it is imperative that strong and dedicated institutional structures be in place at the national as well as global levels."

These are some of the observations on the issue of gender in this year's Human Development in South Asia Report. In more than 200 pages, it examines the situation of women in the social, economic and political contexts of South Asia. It probes education, health, the law, governance, and globalization, and provides a wealth of analysis and data on trends, issues, and opportunities. The report is essential reading for any person or institution concerned about the state of human development in South Asia or the issue of gender globally. A copy of the report will be available to people attending the launch on a one-copy-per-organization basis. This is the fourth in the annual series of reports from the Mahbub ul Haq Human Development Centre, based in Islamabad.
