Public Workshop and Lecture on the Asian Financial Crisis

The academic journal: Studies in Political Economy, the International Development Research Centre, the North-South Institute, and Carleton University are sponsoring a public workshop entitled "The Asian Crisis and Beyond, Prospects for the 21st Century." This full-day workshop will take place on the 20th Floor of Dunton Tower, Carleton University in Ottawa on Friday January 29, starting at 9 a.m. And on Monday February 1, IDRC, the North-South Institute, and Carleton University are sponsoring a public lecture by Robert Wade, entitled "Asian Crisis or Global Crisis? Evaluating Competing Interpretations and Solutions." The lecture will be held on the 14th Floor of IDRC headquarters, 250 Albert Street, Ottawa, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Robert Wade, of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, is author of Governing the Market: Economic Theory and the Role of Government in East Asian Industrialization, as well as recent articles on the Asian crisis published in The Financial Times, The Economist, The Cambridge Journal of Economics, Challenge, World Development, and New Left Review.
The workshop and the lecture will examine the causes and consequences of Asia's economic crisis, especially with respect to the problems of regulating increasingly complex financial systems. Admission to both events is free.
