Forum to Mark World No-Tobacco Day on May 29
1998-05-21
The Canadian Society for International Health and the Pan American Health Organization are organizing a forum to mark World No-Tobacco Day. The forum will be held in Room 237C, Centre Block, Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Friday, May 29, from 10 to 11.30 a.m.
Dr. Carolyn Bennett, M.P, is sponsor and chair. Among the panelists will be David Sweanor, senior legal counsel for the Non-Smokers' Rights Association, Dr. Robert Cushman, Medical Officer of Health for Ottawa-Carleton, and Dr. Enrique Madrigal, of the Division of Health Promotion and Protection at the Pan American Health Organization.
If you plan to attend, please leave a message giving your name and title at (613) 241-5785, Ext. 326, by 5 p.m. on May 27 (a list is needed for Hill security).
On the occasion of World No-Tobacco Day, the World Health Organization calls upon governments, communities, organizations and schools, families and individuals to focus attention on the seriousness of the tobacco epidemic, to take strong action to prevent nicotine addiction in young people, and to protect them from the dangers of environmental tobacco smoke. World No-Tobacco Day is also a day marked by an appeal to those who use tobacco to quit for at least 24 hours, as a first step toward breaking their tobacco addiction.
